Tottenham 3-2 Brentford: Player ratings as Spurs edge thriller to move up to fourth

Image
FROM TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR STADIUM - Three quick-fire goals at the start of the second half helped Tottenham come from behind to beat Brentford. The Bees took an early lead in north London but were undone by their resurgent hosts after the break before setting up a nervy finish. Ange Postecoglou's men have moved above Aston Villa into fourth , while Thomas Frank's side missed the chance to climb to 12th. How the game unfolded Tottenham carved Brentford open a couple of times during the opening exchanges, with Oliver Skipp notably releasing Dejan Kulusevski in beyond the last line, but Mathias Jensen made an excellent recovery challenge to deny his fellow Scandinavian at the last. A similar scenario unfolded at the other end when Neal Maupay sent Keane Lewis-Potter racing away, but the Frenchman had his pocket picked by Skipp upon receiving the ball again inside the box. Mads Roerslev had the ball in the net soon after, only to be denied by an offside flag against Jensen earlier in ...

Brighton 4-2 Tottenham: Player ratings as Pedro double helps Seagulls hold off Spurs

Image
Pervis Estupinan's screamer from distance and two penalties from Joao Pedro helped injury-struck Brighton hold off a similarly patched-up Tottenham at the AMEX Stadium on Thursday night. Jack Hinshelwood thumped the Seagulls in front before Joao Pedro converted from the penalty spot after Dejan Kulusevski pulled Danny Welbeck's shirt in the box. Substitute Estupinan's third Premier League goal gave Brighton an insurmountable lead in the 63rd minute, with the visitors unable to make the most of their forays into the final third while struggling without a recognised centre-back in defence. Giovani Lo Celso's foul on Evan Ferguson allowed Pedro to convert his second penalty, but there was enough time for Spurs to send some nerves shooting through the home fans as 20-year-old Alejo Veliz scored his first ever Premier League goal in the 81st minute. Ben Davies headed in another from Pedro Porro's cross, but Brighton's lead proved too big and they held off the late su...

Everton 1-3 Man City: Player ratings as Cityzens stage second-half fightback

Image
Manchester City closed the gap on their Premier League title rivals with a hard-fought 3-1 victory at Everton on Wednesday night. The Cityzens were forced to come from behind at Goodison Park after Jack Harrison had given the Toffees the lead, and Everton hadn't lost under Sean Dyche this season after scoring first. However, the newly-crowned world champions produced a vintage second -half display on Merseyside to secure all three points as Phil Foden, Julian Alvarez and Bernardo Silva all got on the scoresheet. How the game unfolded There were no early signs of Club World Cup fatigue from the visitors as the remarkable perfection of their possession subdued a typically raucous Goodison Park. City were dominant in the opening 20 minutes and would've gone ahead if it wasn't for a fine double save from Jordan Pickford. The Premier League 's most proficient set-piece performers then started to find a route into the Game via dead ball situations which sparked Goodison in...

Nottingham Forest 0-2 Tottenham: Player ratings as 10-man Spurs hold on at City Ground

Image
Tottenham Hotspur piled the pressure on Steve Cooper with a 2-0 victory at Nottingham Forest on Friday night. Spurs dominated possession but seldom had control of the match on a testing evening at the City G round , with Ange Postecoglou's men digging in deep to secure the three points. Cooper's Forest have now lost five of their last six and are slowly sliding towards the relegation zone, sitting five points clear of the bottom three. How the game unfolded Tottenham went close to taking the lead just three minutes in when Dejan Kulusevski picked out the run of Son Heung-min in behind, but his close-range effort was denied by the leg of Matt Turner. Forest were intent to sit in deep and hit Spurs on the counter, with Anthony Elanga first to test Guglielmo Vicario. The Italian stood tall to deny the Swede after round the visitors' backline, and though a late offside flag went up, replays suggested Elanga may have timed his run to perfection. Turner came to Forest's resc...

Luton 1-2 Man City: Player ratings as Bernardo & Grealish end winless run for the Cityzens

Image
Manchester City had to come from behind to defeat Luton Town away from home on Sunday afternoon, bringing an end to the club's four- Game winless run in the Premier League with a 2-1 win. "Liverpool and Arsenal have struggled to win there," Pep Guardiola warned ahead of City's visit to Hertfordshire. "It will be no different for us." And so it proved. Elijah Adebayo's header on the cusp of half-time had Luton ahead and dreaming. But Bernardo Silva and Jack Grealish fired City in front, keeping Guardiola's side within four points of leaders Liverpool. How the game unfolded Manchester City limped into the contest reeling from arguably the most convincing defeat of Guardiola's tenure, a 1-0 loss to Aston Villa which the Catalan coach likened to a "punch in the face". Erling Haaland's enforced absence through injury was another blow for the champions ahead of kick off and Adebayo connected with City's glass chin to nudge Luton in...
